Campsites in the French Alps
Campsites in the French Alps are nestled between imposing mountains, sloping hills and impressive drops. Laze away the days in Alpine meadows or let off steam on an exciting boat trip on the river, it's all here just a stone's throw from your campsite. The French Alps are a feast for the eyes and the perfect destination for a sporting holiday or restful break in the countryside.
Tips
• Take a challenging mountain hike around Mont Blanc, the highest point in the Alps, with gorges and valleys and panoramas of the most stunning glaciers and majestic peaks in the Alps
• In the Chartreuse national park, you can visit Saint Christophe la Grotte and admire its impressive caves, which have been eroded by water over the years
• Visit the town of Grenoble, ideally situated at the foot of the Alps on the river Isère and boasting historical buildings such as its cathedral and Bastille
Countryside camping
Campsites in the French Alps are a delightful and healthy destination for the whole family. Well-appointed campsites allow you to camp with ease and comfort in some of the most impressive natural landscapes. Camping here really is camping at the heart of nature.
Cycling, water sports, climbing, winter sports and (mountain) hiking, the area offers a wide range of activities for sports enthusiasts.
If you don't wish to bring your own tent, caravan or motorhome, many campsites have accommodation available for hire.
Sights
The area is home to countless conifer trees, the protected Edelweiss plant and the River Rhône, which carves its way through the landscape, adding to the beautiful scenery of the French Alps. Tiny mountain villages, winding roads and picturesque towns boast dozens of sights.
• River Rhône
Adventurous campers can take to the water for rafting, kayaking and canoeing.
• Aix-les-Bains
This small, intimate town boasts a large casino and the Château de la Roche du Roi as its main attractions.
• Skiing, even in the summer
A number of the region's ski resorts are situated on glaciers, giving skiers year-round fun.
Climate
The western area of the Alpine region is home to the French Alps, situated in the eastern and south-eastern region of France. The region is immensely popular amongst skiers during the winter, and in no small part thanks to the large amounts of snow that fall between November and April. The region enjoys a continental climate, with cold winters (temperatures around freezing) and sunny, warm summers of between 25 and 30 degrees. The region's valleys can experience very high temperatures, while the slopes, still sunny, tend to be somewhat cooler.
