Campsites on Lake Garda in Italy
Many of the campsites around Lake Garda are situated on the shores of Italy's largest lake, whose deep blue waters are surrounded by oleanders, lemon trees and cypresses. It's the perfect place to unwind, by the water or on your campsite. Lake Garda boasts a pleasant climate, great Italian restaurants and a rich history.
Tips
• Verona is home to sights such as the Roman amphitheatre, the Arena and Casa di Guiletta, known to many from Shakespeare's famous work Romeo and Juliet
• Venice, a drive of one and a half hours away, is a must-visit destination, with its canals, gondolas and countless churches, palaces and bridges
• Mantua, a beautiful city, surrounded on three sides by three artificial lakes
Camping beside the deep blue waters of the lake
Campsites in this region are highly suited to families and sporty campers, and boast leisure pools, play equipment, entertainment programmes, Italian restaurants and sports facilities, including water sports. The lake and its beautiful shores and beaches are a major draw to campers.
Sports enthusiasts are well catered for on campsites around Lake Garda, with water sports aplenty as well as a number of local cycle routes. Lake Garda really does have something for everyone.
If you don't wish to bring your own caravan, motorhome or tent, you will find that many campsites have accommodation available for hire.
Sights
With golf courses and amusement parks, mountain biking and windsurfing, restaurants and historical sights, the region offers more than enough to see and do. Lake Garda at a glance:
• Sirmione
Sirmione is situated on a peninsula on the southern shore of the lake and boasts a stunning fifteenth-century castle, Rocca Scaligera
• Lazise
A bustling medieval town with a pedestrianised centre and eleventh-century castle
• Gardaland
A large amusement park with something for visitors of all ages, including rollercoasters and shows
Climate
The lake's climate is characterised by cold winters during which snow is not uncommon, especially at higher altitudes. With the arrival of spring come longer periods of sunshine and warmer weather, while temperatures of up to 30 degrees are common in the summer months, especially from mid-May onwards. Rain is more common in the spring and autumn, although temperatures of over 15 degrees are possible.
